What can I expect my child to be learning at Little Shipmates Pre-School?

The majority of activities will be practical and play based. They will be planned to support your child in achieving the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
Resources and areas of learning are continuously available for children to explore, self select and investigate.
Our aim is to create a welcoming and familiar environment in which the children can experience new concepts and revisit skills already learned. The adult role is to support, engage and lead where necessary.
Within the schedule there will be opportunities for all six areas of learning as defined in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum together with group times of song, dance, rhymes and games etc..

The six areas of learning are:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Communication, Language and Literacy
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Physical Development
Creative Development

How will my child's progress be monitored and how will I be kept informed of this?

Your child will be allocated a "Key Person" when they start Little Shipmates Pre-School. This staff member will take particular responsibility for monitoring and recording your child's achievements and progress. They will do this by observing your child in a range of situations e.g. playing independently; working with an adult; sharing in a small group etc.. These observations will be recorded in your child's individual profile on a Record of Achievement.
Observations of your child will be very informal and will be part of the everyday happening in pre-school. Your child will probably not even be aware that it is happening.
The individual profile of your child will contain Early Years Foundation Stage Goals. It will be completed at regular intervals to show the stage your child is currently at and allow staff to plan for their continual development.
These profiles will always be available for parents to view and opportunities provided to discuss the content with staff.
